Stepping It Up Another Notch!

Well, I made it through the holiday without any major incidents. I actually lost two pounds over the long weekend! My check in with my specialist went very well and he's happy with my progress and my plans for the coming month.

Which leads me to my latest, greatest, hair brained ideas!
Karate is back in session. WOOHOO!! It felt good to be back last night. It's crazy how much we miss it. It's even crazier how much of my new material I forgot over the past two weeks! As crazy as our summer schedule is right now with the kids still in baseball/softball, we do much better when we are all on our schedule. Unfortunately, due to the craziness of that schedule, last night was the only karate class I'll make it to this week. I'm looking forward to hitting it hard next week though!

I'm still training for the Whistlestop Half Marathon. I'm in week four of training and my longest run this week will be four miles. Total I will need a two mile, a three mile and a four mile. No problem, man! Tonight, depending on how soon I can get away from Emmy Lou's softball games (she has one doubleheader tonight and another tomorrow, so I'm bailing early from tonight's since it's her dad's night to have them) I am hoping to do the three mile run. My best friend is coming to visit from Kansas this weekend. They arrive on Thursday, so I'm planning my workouts accordingly.

The big excitement is that I've added one more sport to my schedule! I stumbled across a blog a few weeks ago by a woman named Adrienne Osuna. She's a typical mom who's into heavy lifting. I've always been intrigued by heavy lifting and my specialist has mentioned a few times how much weight training would help me lose weight and keep it off. I've made so many excuses as to why I can't do it... no time, injuries, I'm already doing _________, I can't make it to the gym, blah blah blah.

Over the 4th of July weekend she posted information about an 8 week weight lifting & healthy lifestyle challenge on her Instagram page. I had to do it. Enough excuses! This was my chance to learn more about heavy lifting, which surrounded by others who are also learning.

So, July 10th the challenge began. Yesterday! We planned out our dinners for the week on our way back from the cabin on Sunday. I packed my lunch and my workout bag on Sunday night. I even went for my long run (3.5 miles) on Sunday evening to get that out of the way. Then, yesterday I walked over to the wellness center at lunch, found the weight room and completed my first heavy lifting workout. It was arms day and my arms were shaking the rest of the day/night!!!

I wasn't alone. Working on a college campus I didn't think I would be alone. There were three co-eds in the room when I got there. I raised the average age quite a bit when I walked in the door! I just minding my own business and did what I had to do. I definitely gave myself a mental pat on the back for being the old, chubby lady working out in the college weight room, and completely acting like she knew what she was doing!

So, there you have it! I am now working on a 4 day/week weight lifting plan. I will run on my off days, or my arm days. Karate and muay thai will fall where they fall. I'm not worrying about them as far as falling on arm or leg days. That may change if I find I'm really struggling to get through an hour class though. I'm excited! I'm allowing room for error. This is new and I don't want to get hurt, but overall I am hoping that by toning and strengthening my muscles I'll be able to avoid injuries in my other activities and maybe even eliminate some regular pain.

Now to post the scary part. Here's my schedule for the next week...

Tuesday: Run 3 miles (Emmy Lou has a doubleheader)
Wednesday: Leg Day Weights & Karate (if Emmy Lou's doubleheader gets canceled)
Thursday: Run 2 miles
Friday: REST (My best friend is coming to town, so this is our girls' day)

Most weeks it'll look more like this:

Monday: Weights (arms), Short Run & Karate
Tuesday: Weights (legs), & Muay Thai
Wednesday: Short Run & Karate
Thursday: Weights (arms), Muay Thai & Karate
Friday: Weights (legs) & Short Run
Saturday: REST
Sunday: Long Run

Again, I'm leaving room for error. I may not hit every run or every weight day, but I have a certain number of karate and muay thai days that I need to get in to test in September. Muay Thai may be tight, but I'll be sure to get enough karate classes!

All of this means I'm also very focused and diligent with what I eat. I'm making sure I get enough protein for my muscles and carbs for energy. It's crazy how high I am bumping my calories. It goes against everything that's been ingrained in me as far as low carb and low calorie to not gain weight, but my body will need it all. That was part of the challenge. By working with this group, Adrienne sent me my daily targets for my macros - Calories, Carbs, Fats & Proteins. It's a big adjustment to go from 90g of protein to 150g!!!

This is definitely a week of learning. Oh, and my arms hurt so bad today!!!
